House leveling up- July 2021
The month of July was an interesting of mix of time off, projects, and the return to school for Mr B. It’s hard to imagine that we crammed all that into a single month. The fact that we’re over halfway done with 2021 is mind boggling, isn’t it? In February, we decided to go ahead an insert a desk building project onto our to-do list. We worked on it since then, through design, sourcing materials, prototyping, and extensive sanding (our basement workshop looks like a dust bomb went off). I think there’s a good blog post J could write about this project and his other ideas at becoming a hobbyist furniture builder. Getting a semi-functional desk was our big accomplishment for July. Here’s what else we did:
- Saw family for the 4th of July
- Removed our stairwell ‘cap’ for further sanding and polying
- Had a fun day boating on Lake Shelbyville
- The start of 4th grade (in person) for Mr B
- I returned to the office for a week (back home now, thanks Delta)
- Some long over-due caulk on trim and siding around exterior doors
- Create a paper prototype of our next woodworking project (the fireplace mantle)
- Had our first potato harvest from our garden
August is more back to school activities and a return to our to-do list. I doubt the garden has anything left for us but I’m hoping for one tomato after the bunnies have helped themselves to the other 4 I had. Little buggers.

I think the desk deserves a plaque, date completed, designed and built by, etc. Since it will be in the house forever and decades from now someone will be curious about this exquisite piece of furniture and it’s “providence”.
