House leveling up- October 2020

House leveling up- October 2020

We started this month grateful that we got 5 weekends that we could dedicate to trying to complete the trim. The bank was insisting that it be finished before closing out the construction loan and we were eager to pay a lower interest rate, so extra fuel was adding to the fire to get the last of the trim installed. It really does finish things up and reduce that ‘construction chic’ look we’ve had for over a year. We had…

House leveling up- September 2020

This past month brought a sole long weekend of work as we helped long time friends move, prep their old house for sale, and then were gone for a family vacation. But what we managed to accomplish is both beautiful and impressive. Basically we focused on the last large project required for our final inspection. We completed the handrails for the main stairs. We had done the handrail to the basement some months back, but have lived with no handrails…

Passed Inspection!

Passed Inspection!

Assuming you read the title before you clicked that, then you know the exciting reason for this mid-month post: we passed our final inspection! The building permit was opened on August 16, 2018 and closed 2 years and 28 days later. Of the two powerful authorities holding sway over my project, one of them is now out of the picture. I can’t pass the feeling over to you, but trust me when I say its a weight lifted. I have…

House leveling up- August 2020

House leveling up- August 2020

This month was productive in terms of house progress, but also a bit of a whirlwind on many levels. The preparations to return to school, both for the University where we both work and for the local schools our kids attend have both been up in the air and subject to last minute changes. Thus we found ourselves fighting through hectic and unpredictable days at work and railing at frustrating and unpredictable Fall schooling plans for the kids at night….

Projects for year 2

Projects for year 2

We’re always posting about all the projects we’ve gotten done so I know it can seem like we must be almost done. Not quite. We moved into our dream home looking less like anything ready for a magazine photoshoot. Unless they were there for the pre-reveal ‘how-will-they-pull-this-off?’ moment. And we’re still not ready to say it’s “Done” (can we all just agree that when you read this you’ll hear ‘Ding’ in your head?) going into our second year of living…

House leveling up- July 2020

House leveling up- July 2020

We’ve crossed a full year in the house. But in this anniversary month we completed: I GREW GRASS (and a million weeds) Acquired approximately 5,000 ft of trim (baseboard, window and door trim) Painted Jim’s office Began installing and painting trim Left for our first vacation of 2020 August will be almost solely focused on completing more trim. Anything else that gets done is cake. To an outsider (or blog reader), it may seem like there’s so little to be…

House leveling up- June 2020

Well, progress has slowed to slower than a crawl. Unless you’re a sloth- then you’re pretty on track. I started this post thinking about my upcoming (current when you read this) visit from my in-laws. They have been THE.MOST.SUPPORTIVE during this whole crazy project. But I was thinking, “What have we even accomplished since they were last here (Thanksgiving)?” Well a few things I guess*… But most recently: Celebrated our boy turning EIGHT which included a trip to the drive…

House leveling up- May 2020

Will I ever post one of these on time again? Time goes in a blink and stretches out for eons. And not in the right balance if you ask me. Hung some drywall in the basement to separate workshop side from storage side Took a day off and went hiking with the kids Taught Miss K to mow Prepped the AC for summer weather Added shelves to the linen closet in the master bathroom- still no door yet The gutters…

House leveling up- April 2020

House leveling up- April 2020

April was a return to project weekends as we had taken some time off to ‘relax’ in unequal trade for our cancelled vacation. We have tried to stay out of the stores as much as possible and complete projects with whatever we have on hand. But we’re starting to get to the point that to make further progress a trip to the store will be required. What we did get done is pretty rewarding though. Install smart switch for garage…

How the house ‘lives’ now that we’re self-isolating

How the house ‘lives’ now that we’re self-isolating

We have several times commented on how the house ‘lives’ exactly how we imagined it would, or how well a feature we put in fits so well and how glad we are that we thought of adding/creating this, that, or whatever. Well, it’s a bit different to think about how your house might ‘live’ when you’re now forced to live in it almost exclusively (only going out for fresh air or quick trips to the grocery store). We certainly didn’t…
